PrologueSomething is strange. I heard my parents discussing rapid change in government. News like this scares me. It scares me because it's reality. It's real. Not knowing much about politics, I immediately ask what's going on. I had a lump in my throat. But they quickly change the subject to avoid the question, as if I hadn't asked it. I know they heard me. It makes me angry. I ask again, this time in a wide, stern voice. They both exchange a worried look. “Alexis,” Mom said, “I know we ignore you. It's better this way. But I think 16 is old enough to know that. "What is it?" I reply: “Our country is gaining a new leader and he will subject us to a communist government.” he says stammering. At first I didn't believe what he was saying. But then it hit me. Why aren't they alarmed? "What! For how long?" I say trembling: “His name is Korban Thomas. He says it will only last four years, so it will all be over by 2036. But for now we must respect his ways.” he says. I go up to my room. As I walk up the stairs, a tear begins to roll down my cheek. I am afraid. Aren't communist countries bad? Why can't we just have freedom like there was before? Why is everyone else in the county okay with this? Everyone is calm. They are already under his rule. But not me. Am I really the only one who thinks this way? I can't be. There must be someone else out there who has the same mentality as me. There really has to be.Chapter 1: The RevolutionOur country is collapsing. We no longer have freedom. We are no longer united. The patriotic United States is no longer known for ringing with freedom. Our leader has turned against us. We no longer have the right to be ourselves. We need to follow... the center of the card... a ladder on the wall leading to an escape hatch on the roof. I got out just in time. he said. I tell her all about the plan and that I have to stop it. We cross the Capitol at the end of the street. I wear a long black coat with a hood to disguise myself. I have to adapt like a normal citizen or I will be captured. When I get to the top floor where President Thomas' office is located I have to be cautious. Ashley says she'll stand guard outside his office. Within. His office is empty. I run to his computer and insert the USB stick. When it loads, I see the countdown. It ends in ten seconds. Pure adrenaline flows through me. This is my moment. I put my hand on the "deactivate" button. Ready to turn it off. Then I hear the click of a gun. I look and it's President Thomas. He says, “Oh Alexis, I always knew you were one to watch.”
