The belief and cult of the Big Dipper has existed for centuries and has appeared in many different cultures due to the influence of the Han culture. This is due to the popularity of Taoism as a religion. Due to the flourishing of Taoism, the cult of the star group Ursa Major flourished among the people. However, with the fall of Taoism due to modernization and the impact of foreign religions such as Buddhism, Christianity and other religions, there has been a significant decline in star worship. In this essay I intend to find out how the cult of the Big Dipper was born and the influence it created among different cultures in China. Ursa Major is a group of 7 stars near the North Star (Polaris). It is composed of Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, Megrez, Alioth, Mizar and Alkaid. It has a particular shape that resembles the plow, or the butcher's cleaver, as the English called it. When we look up into the clear sky, the Big Dipper will be shown as in this image. The Big Dipper This group of stars is symbolic in many cultures. In Mongolian culture they are called the Seven Gods. In Taoism, the Big Dipper is extremely important and many myths and legends are derived from this group of stars. If one has read Jin Yong's Condor Heroes, the QuanZhen sect has a special martial arts series where seven Taoists form the Ursa Major form and fight using this formation. It is called 北斗七星阵 which means the seven stars of the Ursa Major formation. Origins These seven stars were also noticed by ancient astronomers in China. They gave them names like 天枢 Tian Shu 天璇 Tian Xuan 天玑 Tian Ji 天权 Tian Quan 玉衡 Yu Heng 开阳 Kai Yang 摇光 Yao Guang. He therefore failed in his fight against Buddhism or other Chinese philosophies such as Confucianism and Mencius. Buddhism in turn collaborated with Confucianism and absorbed much of its theory to gain the upper hand among the people. Therefore Taoism lost its battle. Therefore, as time passes, the cult of the stars or the Big Dipper is maintained only in some rituals such as funeral rituals. The Big Dipper Belief in Cultures Not Under the Influence of Han CultureDuring my class on 民间文学 (Chinese folk literature), my teacher once told me about the origins of the Mongolian Big Dipper belief. It was once said that there were six brothers in Mongolia. They were adults and had to leave their family to pursue their careers or undertake future projects. Before separating, they
