Construction is one of Canada's largest industries. Low interest rates in Canada have fueled demand for housing, leading the Canadian construction sector to a CAGR of 2% between 2008 and 2012 (Companies and Markets, 2013). The fact is that building construction has a significant effect on the environment. It is a large consumer of raw materials, land and energy, as well as generating a mass of greenhouse gases and other pollutants (USA EPA, 2008). According to data from Statistics Canada (2012), in 2008 the construction sector produced 2.1% of total greenhouse gas emissions from the Canadian industrial sector. The purpose of this project is to convince construction companies in Waterloo Region to adopt best practicable practices for reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the construction process. Therefore, guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas emissions and best practices should be determined first. Before promoting such best practices to construction companies in Waterloo, adequate guidance on the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions should be provided to help them calculate their greenhouse gas emissions and determine their problems. . Considering this problem, some protocols can be used, which include inventories, toolsets and guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas emissions (Matthews, Hendrickson & Weber, 2008). Best practices are defined as methods or techniques that are consistently verified as superior to other means, and can sometimes be used for benchmarking (Business Dictionary, 2012). The proposed best practices for construction industries should be cost-effective, feasible and suitable for the construction life cycle. As indicated by many literatures, the construction life cycle should be divided into production and transportation of construction materials... half of the article... the literature analysis indicated that there is a research gap in the application of the best practices for construction companies in Waterloo Region. The M5 Group will work with MMM Consulting Company from January to April 2014 to find out how to fill this gap. The planned research will be based on the views of construction companies in Waterloo Region regarding the implementation of best practices to achieve better environmental performance. By determining which companies are willing to improve environmental performance, further research would be conducted to find out whether such best practices are feasible and achievable by providing correct emissions calculation and guidance on best practices. The purpose of this research is to promote feasible and cost-effective best practices for construction companies in Waterloo Region to help them achieve their greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal.
