“Iron man” is a superhero, but “Iron woman” is a command. Although these statements may seem ridiculous, they carry with them an important message that dates back centuries. Over many years the world has been socially unified with one similarity: the culture of a patriarchal society. A patriarchal society is a social society in which males are the primary figures of authority, own property, and occupy political leadership. When such important roles are taken on by men, women are expected to be obedient, silent and useless (except in household chores). History has numerous examples in books, morals, and real life where women are known through culture as unimportant. A classic novel, Frankenstein, also shares this fact about women. Women are depicted as weak throughout Mary Shelly's novel Frankenstein because they are dependent on men, treated as property, and helpless in difficult times. Some may believe that women were portrayed as strong in the novel through the act of sacrifice. and through their potential to make big changes. Justine was a character who had a strong reputation in the story. She was described as strong because she was not afraid of dying when the townspeople accused her of murder for William's death. “I am not afraid to die” (Shelley 76) are fearless words that come out of Justine and are so strong because they give Justine respect for what she has done from her current family members, and make Victor guilty because he did not confess to what happened true cause of William's death. Although the death of a woman painted her as strong, the non-existence of a woman also made her appear strong in the novel. When Frankenstein mentions the negative aspects of creating a female creature, he says as "a... middle of paper..." "I regarded... Elizabeth as mine, mine to protect and love and cherish." "(23). Elizabeth is not the only woman to be described as weak; Caroline Beaufort is also weak. When her father becomes poor, he also becomes seriously ill and is cared for by his daughter, but after his death there is no no one left to take care of her. It was then that "He came as a protecting spirit" (20) and saved Caroline from continuing a bad life. This indirectly shows how Caroline was weak because she was saved and “protected” by her father Frankenstein.Throughout the novel, women are depicted and described as weak creatures who are incapable of dealing with difficult circumstances in life. While this may be true in the novel Frankenstein, real life is no longer the case distinct society that is fully patriarchal, many cultures still demonstrate this.
