Hector's poor listening skills are insulted early in the film. Instead of paying as much attention as he should to his patients, Hector draws in his notebook. As the film progresses and nears the end, Hector no longer lacks the ability to listen. Now he laughs and interacts more and more with his patients. He listens and loves his career much more. Throughout his journey, Hector constantly asks, "What makes you happy?" Hector asks this of almost everyone he meets. Edward, a cranky businessman, becomes the first one she asks this of at the start of her journey. To this, Edward responds with the idea that money means happiness. Hector takes note of what Edward says by writing in his notebook: "Many people think that being happy is being richer or more important." Later in the film, Hector travels to Los Angeles first class. On this plane he takes care of Kamila, a woman with a brain tumor. Although dying and in pain, Kamila tells Hector her story. It explains how much a woman's luck is due to the love that surrounds her. Hector listens to her and helps her make the plane ride her last and best. Kamila tells Hector, “To listen is to love,” which he also writes
