Even more, children who receive too little or too much gratification at a given stage of development will become fixated, unable to overcome the instincts of that stage. A person fixated on a particular developmental stage will adopt an oral, anal, or phallic personality type in an attempt to gratify the instincts of that stage in later adulthood. An oral personality characteristic would manifest itself with security issues, while an anal personality characteristic would be power issues, and finally a phallic personality characteristic would be sexuality.
