William Faulkner's short story “A Rose For Emily” opens the reader to the secluded, strange and depressing life of Miss Emily Grierson as seen through the eyes of people of the city and told through one of the citizens. The mystery and curiosity of others is highlighted from the beginning of the story when the reader is introduced to Miss Emily's death. From the first sentences there is a tone of darkness and curiosity in the story. This tone helps to pique the reader's interest in the main character's lonely life and enrich the story as it progresses towards the climax. Miss Emily lives such an isolated life that very few are a part of. The events that happen and her actions in the story make the citizens continue to talk and wonder about her and her house. People are eager to check out the home of the recently deceased, and a story quickly begins to reveal why people are so fascinated by Miss Emily. Faulkner's use of curious, gossipy, and dark tones helps establish Miss Emily's opinion among those living around her and reveal already known details that she has hidden in her home. A subtle tone throughout the story is that of inquisition or curiosity. . This happens through the questions asked by the citizens and also when the narrator openly says that they are curious. From the first paragraph it is clear that the townspeople are not interested in Miss Emily's funeral but want to take a look at her house which had not been visited in years. The reader gets his first glimpse of the neighbors' curiosity when the narrator says "...the women were mostly driven by curiosity to see the inside of his house, which no one but an old m...... means of paper ...... begins with the death of Miss Emily and ends with the final discovery of the remains of the one she loved The dark tones suggest through the story that people already know the fate of the man she loved and provide clues to the why it might have happened. His sad, lonely and decaying life is shown through the talk of the town and keeps the reader focused on what is about to be discovered after his death. From the first sentence it is evident that the reader will know why wants to look inside the house and as the story progresses, the reader begins to get an idea of ​​what people expect to find is done mainly with the tones set in the story and together with the city he feels the harsh reality of the situation and through the use of different tones he manages to discover with the city exactly what everyone was waiting to see.
