Topic > Eastern religion vs. Western - 787

Religion, “part of the human experience that has to do with a god or gods, a higher power, or the ultimate values of life” (Cason and Tillman 6-7), is one of the topics most controversial and interesting for humanity. They have been around as long as anyone can remember and they have differences and similarities in their founders, beliefs and history. Religion served to give a sort of meaning to life and everything around it. In modern society, some religions have grown and expanded significantly. These larger religions have been classified as world religions. Furthermore, these world religions have been divided into two categories known as Eastern and Western religion. Eastern religions originated from the eastern side of the Earth from countries such as: China, Japan and India. Eastern religions have different histories, some of which include a founder like Buddha in Buddhism and others without a founder like Shinto. Most Eastern religions have similar belief systems that must be applied to their way of life. According to the authors of World Religions, “These religions profess to live in harmony with nature and to seek a balance between the spiritual world and reality.” In addition to balance and harmony, these religions also share a belief in the use of meditation, in considering nature as sacred, and, above all, in a polytheistic universe. As Eastern religions grew and expanded throughout history, their beliefs and cultures began to mix and merge. with others. This created tolerance and acceptance between religions. A great example of this is Hinduism because it accepts any belief that has a different philosophy on how to achieve salvation, as long as it does not deviate from the core beliefs. Also…half of the paper…successfully expanded with peace of mind. On the other hand, Western religions have a very violent and bloody past during their growth and expansion. As mentioned by Cason and Tillman “A defining theme running through the history of all three Western religions is that they were born out of conflict.” And even today they are in conflict. In conclusion, the process of growth and expansion for both Eastern and Western religions has been a great journey. As mentioned above, Eastern religions expanded very peacefully, while the growth and expansion of Western religions was more violent. Both went through many changes and adaptations that included some blending of cultures and beliefs. In some cases the result was a new religion. Ultimately, both religions had to go through a process of great growth and expansion to become the world religions of today.
