I Am Legend, directed by Francis Lawrence, is a 2007 American post-apocalyptic dystopian film. Throughout the entire dystopian trailer, the director used its visual construction as main tool not only to attract the audience, but also to deduce the key elements of a dystopia. In doing so, Francis Lawrence used a wide range of visual techniques such as the use of camera angles, montages and word captions to help him evoke the primary elements of a dystopia. In the opening scenes of the trailer, the audience is already exposed to the dystopian atmosphere of chaos, social anarchy and oppression. This is aided by short frenetic montages and overhead shots of teeming streets, close-up shots of terrified people and military forces. This also conveys the extent of the chaos this “dilemma” has caused. Even a short scene of the main protagonist Robert fighting in the crowd was visually constructed to make the audience understand that he is the main character of this film. The visual construction of this scene uses a slow motion close-up shot focusing on Will Smith with the background blurred to completely draw the audience into him. What's even more unique is that this combination of effects serves as an inference that Will Smith is the solution or only hope to resolve this anarchy as he quickly makes his way through the congested streets. The bridge explosion also informs the audience that the narrative is set in New York, implicitly being a city landmark. Already in the exposition, the visual conventions provided an engaging and well-informed construction of the dystopian qualities and information about the plot itself. The montage sequence of Will barricading his house and the pure sunset reflecting from the window informs that the protagonists are vulnerable to the night. The bird's eye view of Will in the bathtub with his dog and hugging a sniper highlights the protagonist's vulnerability. This visual construction truly exerted a strong emotional effect on the audience, as well as providing a clear emotional synopsis of a dystopian narrative. Visual construction plays an important role in establishing the plot and drawing viewers into a dystopian story. It's the finishing touches that make a film a masterpiece.
