Bullying between Freaks and Geeks Walking down the school corridor towards the next class, the bully appears before his prey. He stands before his future victims as if he were half a meter taller and ten times stronger. His victims attempt to ignore him, but he stops them and puts his face in front of theirs to ensure his presence is known. Then he suddenly decides to save his senseless punishment for another day as he passes with a gentle shove to the shoulder. In today's high schools, most bullying incidents occur this way. A bully finds weaker kids and targets them. Freaks and Geeks, a television show, demonstrates these specific instances of bullying and their effect on the character Bill Haverchuck. The pain caused by bullying goes beyond surface-level bruises and extends to damaging internal feelings. When analyzing Freaks and Geeks, it is evident that this television show demonstrates the physical and emotional effects of bullying through the character Bill Haverchuck. Being a breeding ground for bullies, high school has become an unhappy place for select students. If a student is not an exceptional athlete or is not accepted by his or her peers, he or she is more than likely to be bullied at some point in his or her high school career. Geeks in any high school normally put up with the most bullying. The consequences of insults and physical abuse on students are horrific. Bullying can cause serious emotional problems. From insecurity to a lack of self-esteem, students begin to experience negative feelings about themselves and their lives. Bill Haverchuck, a character from Freaks and Geeks, faces the same struggles as real-life bullying victims. Presenting a typical school environment, Freaks and Geeks shows the com...... center of paper......press others in an attempt to gain respect and sympathy from other peers. Bill's reasoning for trying to fit in was similar to that of his bully. Despite having similar goals, Bill's bully went too far and ended up causing another student to be hospitalized. Bill Haverchuck's character was used in this episode to show how silly and unnecessary bullying is. As shown as a real problem within high school through Freaks and Geeks on television, bullying is something that needs to be understood and addressed. In an age where bullies have more resources at their disposal, the consequences are too severe to do nothing about them. Bullying now extends beyond school hallways and has invaded students in their own homes.
