Topic > Twelve Who Ruled – Why Tenacious Terror Was Necessary

In the year 1793-94, the reign of terror invoked by the twelve members of the Committee of Public Safety (CPS) was inevitable and paved the way for a metamorphosis that occurred all Interior France during the French Revolution. While the word terror is often associated with Halloween or stories meant to scare and entertain, the word had a much more serious meaning to the French people. The theme of fear allowed members of the CPS to transform the monarchy into a revolutionary government in the hope of implementing the already written constitution (75). A group of well-educated radical republicans known as Jacobins developed the CPS in the fifth year of the French Revolution, and each of the twelve members faced a monthly election to continue ruling France (72). During this time, France and its people were in need of assistance. The monarchy that controlled France eight centuries earlier ignored and heavily taxed the lower-middle class inhabitants (the sans-culottes) who ironically were the majority and the poorest. The aim of the CPS was to establish middle and lower class rights and privileges enjoyed only by the nobility and clergy. While the nobles bore the negative consequences of the revolution and the wars of previous years, the majority of the nation suffered its effects much more severely. One of the main tasks of the new revolutionary government included repairing the damage caused by the previously ruling monarchy. Other programs included supervising the revolutionary armies, along with generals of the royal armies working to purge France of impending invaders, and distributing supplies of food and goods necessary for living (74). The CPS never intended a revolutionary government to be a permanent solution,...... middle of paper......Bespierre predicted that it would create a gateway for the beginning of another chapter involving the French Revolution , the military dictatorship (372 ). The steps France took to become an independent republic were certainly not easy, but without these transitions the nation would have taken much longer to progress. In today's society, it is hard to believe that violence and terror would be essential for anything other than entertainment. . Unfortunately, to triumph as an independent nation, wickedness is often unavoidable and is only used as a last resort. As discussed in class, other countries have recently sought or are achieving sovereignty that is so easy to take for granted. While the development may not be the same as the French Revolution, the terror produced by the Committee of Public Safety stands as a warning to those seeking revolutionary freedom.
