Many children receive Bravery awards every year around the world and none of them hold a gun or punch someone in the face to show they are brave, a different than what most people imagine it to be. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus believed that true courage and bravery are about facing the negativities of life and society with persistence and adhering to one's conviction, no matter the cost. Jem and Mrs. Dubose are two characters that strongly apply to Atticus's meaning of courage and courage. Dubose was a truly brave woman in Atticus's eyes. Atticus tried to teach his children the true meaning of courage by setting her as an example. Ms. Dubose fought so hard to die the way she wanted to die, but she didn't even ask for help, even though it was difficult for her to fight the addiction on her own. “Most of the time you read something to her, I doubt she heard a word you said. His whole mind and body were focused on that alarm clock. (Harper Lee, 120) In this quote, Mrs. Dubose was fighting for her dignity while she was alive by not asking for help. If Mrs. Dubose had told Jem that these were his last days, he would have arrived earlier every day and it would have eased his struggle. Instead he chose not to and ignored the pain to maintain his dignity. Ms. Dubose's beliefs were her top priority. The actions taken by most people or his personal needs did not influence his way of thinking because he had a courageous heart. "Jem, when you're as sick as she is, it's okay to take anything to make things easier for you, but it wasn't okay for her." (Harper Lee, 120) When Atticus set the example for Jem, he did not mean him personally but meant… middle of paper… courage and bravery in Atticus's eyes, and both Jem and Mrs. Dubose abide by what he meant. Ms. Dubose powerfully played the role of the courageous woman who fights for her dignity by ignoring what others do, and portrayed the person who struggles alone without asking for help. Jem has gone through the growth process of being a responsible man who keeps his word no matter what, despite the fear he may face by doing so or despite the bad results that may occur. By understanding what courage and boldness truly are, positive outcomes in society could occur. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” Mrs. Dubose was a great example of fighting addiction, and Jem was a great example of the true form of maturity, and if these examples were used well they could be positioned as a solution to most part of the problems. the problems of the world.
