In ska, all guitars are the same, making fast, snappy strums up and down, with a quick muting of the strings with the palm of the hand. All ska guitarists do the same thing, and sometimes one of the band members does a solo. One of the other ways ska and punk can be distinguished is through rhythm. In punk music, the drum beat is very fast, loud and balanced. Punk guitar also uses power chords to emphasize the rhythm. The rhythm of ska is easier to identify thanks to the rhythm produced by the guitar, which is similar to the rhythm of reggae. Ska and punk each have a different number of band members, and the band members have different roles. A punk band will have three or four members, one who plays bass, one or two who play guitar and one who plays drums. In many bands the singer is the guitarist, but sometimes it is the bassist and sometimes also the drummer, but this is rare. Ska bands have a lot more people. It is common in a ska band to have a bass player, one or two guitarists, a drummer, two or three trombones, one or two trumpets and a singer. Also, in a ska band, the singer never plays an instrument. In both punk and ska, all people play guitar, trumpets or sing trombones
