The three literary devices are images, symbolism and foreshadowing. However, these literary devices can be intertwined with any story. The death of Ivan Ilych is a great omen. “His pain was being shoved into a deep, narrow black sack.” (Tolstoy pg.145) The black sack signifies death and the pain being pushed into the sack foreshadows his feelings and they become his death. A White Heron embarks on the imagery of the literary device. Imagining things in stories and making them a thing is actually in the story. “We watched the sea and the morning together” (Jewett page 113) Finally, Because the turtle's shell was not smooth, the literary device used is symbolism.
