Topic > The True Minister in The Crucible by Arthur Miller

An evil mind is a closed box, unless it is opened no one knows what is inside, yet once opened it is easily seen. Likewise, an evil character has a talent for being manipulative, is prejudiced against the decisions of others, and selfishly desires to gain power without thinking about the effect it might have on other individuals. In Auther Miller's The Crucible some depraved characters like Reverend Parris disrupt the peace in society by manipulating other individuals and being selfishly greedy for power and reputation without keeping in mind the effect it might have on society. Reverend Parris's astute behavior of influencing other individuals helped him save his reputation in society. Parris manipulates Marry Warren by confusing her with his own words and making Danforth believe that Mary Warren is a liar to save his reputation in society. When John Proctor brought Marry Warren on the witchcraft trail to prove that she was pretending to faint and didn't see any spirit, Parris argues and asks Marry Warren to faint in court and pretend again, he says "Yes, faint. Show us how you faked many times in court” (Miller 106). This shows the eagerness Parris has to save his reputation. He is willing by all means to prove in court that Marry Warren is lying. Parris says, “Your Excellency, this is a trick to blind the court!” (Miller 106). Clearly, Parris becomes agitated here and is afraid that if Danforth believes Marry Warren, his reputation will be in trouble, so he makes a statement of the genre so that he can now play straight with Marry Warren's statement and make her confess however he wants. Furthermore, Parris is able to do this because... in the middle of the card... the effect it could have on society , says, “Your Excellency, I would postpone these hangings for a while” (Miller 127). Parris wants Salem's witchcraft trail to continue because he doesn't want people to know that Abigial ran off with his money, as it makes it obvious that Abigial has been lying this whole time. Furthermore, Parris believes that if Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor were hanged, the people would rebel against him since he is the minister of Salem. Therefore, this shows the prejudiced nature of Parris as he is responsible for putting Rebecca Nurse and Proctor in prison, and now wants the traces of witchcraft to continue so that his reputation and power are not affected. In conclusion, Parris's selfish and cunning nature towards society in protecting his reputation makes him the most evil character in Salem..
