The time frame in which this book appeared is July 2006 to April 2007 in Charleston, South Carolina. Describing a homeless man, Shepard begins in Crisis Ministries, a homeless shelter that would have “the resources needed to get it back on its feet” (Chapter 1, page 9), which was a big kick. -starter for your project. Shepard would move into the penthouse of one of his boss George's friends, Mickey, because it was "the best all-around deal he [I] would find" (Chapter 11, page 137) and because he wanted to leave the Ministers of Crisis, as Shepard accepted that it was unacceptable to consider remaining in the Crisis Ministries. Shepard later bought an apartment with his co-worker, Derrick, cousin, Bubble Gum, because Shepard "wanted something more permanent". (Chapter 12, page 167) At the end of his story, Shepard abruptly ends his project and returns to his childhood home in Raleigh, North Carolina, because "his [my] mother's cancer has returned and with a 'even greater aggression (Chapter 16, page 167) 203). Most readers are familiar with the basic concept of the American Dream, what the speaker intends the audience to do is to acquire a “You can do better than this! " mentality (Epilogue, page 218). Throughout the story, Shepard takes any type of job he would like to get because working was central to his goal of earning enough money to thrive in America. He said: “any job was better than no job”. (Chapter 4, page 48) because it promotes difference in life, the difference has been made in one's life or in the lives of others. The audience would be described as skeptics who question the reality of the American Dream and anyone looking for guidance, but are unsure of the American Dream because Shepard forms many warnings... middle of paper... Pants? $3. Shoes? $3.50", (chapter 6, page 74) had a casual attitude proving that Goodwill was the store for a homeless man like him. Shepard can be described as ambitious and relevant in his time as a mover: “This shit won't move since alone, guys. You might as well go." (Chapter 14, page 186) Shepard is also sought after as a caring and generous individual because when his mother's cancer brutally attacked her a second time during his project, he abandoned his project altogether to care for her with his brother Erik; “I was supposed to go home to Raleigh, where Erik and I… will take care of my mother.” (Chapter 16, page 204) Scratch Beginnings is Shepard's first published book, making it impartial in its history, seeing as Shepard would not have any previous writing experience. Shepard sets out to be "just a normal guy" (Introductory Chapter, page ix).
