While the number may seem surprisingly high, it was higher in previous years. From over 30% surviving on $1 a day to just over 10%, citizens around the world are doing a successful job of bringing publicity to world poverty and reducing the number of people experiencing it, but not only that. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names (para. 8). A billion people without adequate education, a billion people who would die for the riches and luxuries of the middle class, we, we have a billion people suffering from poverty, about 14% of the world's population.
