Nurses as Primary Care Providers Every individual in the world deserves to enjoy health and well-being. Maintaining or achieving adequate health needs allows individuals to be productive at work and in their free time. Traditionally, many people have faced barriers to obtaining adequate healthcare due to financial constraints or personal hardships. Despite impressive technological advances in medicine, the challenge of providing quality healthcare to Americans continues to be debated among the nation's political and healthcare leaders. The aging of the baby boom generation and the increase in the number of uninsured people add to the population growth equation that results in limited access to basic healthcare for the entire public. On the other hand, this has triggered the need for professional nurses with advanced experience to unveil the full potential of the profession. Professional nurses have been called upon to meet the public's demand for safe and convenient healthcare. These academically and clinically well-prepared nurse practitioners demonstrate their knowledge, skill, and leadership in communities (Hansen-Turton, Miller, Nash, Ryan, & Counts, n.d.). Due to growing concerns about increased access to healthcare, ANA has supported the ongoing work of nurses in retail healthcare clinics to reflect a positive movement towards accurate, quality healthcare for all citizens. Since 2000, nurses have been employed by convenience clinics or retail clinics such as Minute Clinic and Take Care Health Systems. Whether they are independently owned or chain stores, retail clinics have a family nurse practitioner or physician assistant who offers a convenient location and evening hours…middle of the paper…assistant nurse should have a clear understanding on the prevailing need for nurses with advanced skills in our communities. Next, all nurses must realize the need to come together as one voice to participate in the transformation process affecting the nursing profession. Indeed, the influential nursing voice representing the largest healthcare workforce can have a substantial impact on policies and reforms affecting our communities. Equally important, nurses should prepare to improve clinical and communication skills in preparation to accept greater responsibilities in promoting and managing today's healthcare complexities. Nurses in retail care clinics, demonstrating skill and artistry as primary care providers, symbolize the positive transformation with which the nursing profession is engaged in meeting the urgent needs of communities.
