The USS Indianapolis was a heavy cruiser. It did not have heavy armor making it vulnerable to torpedo attacks. She had been ordered to sail on July 16, 1945, to deliver a bomb that would end the war. Unfortunately it sank before arriving. It was July 30th around 11.30pm. Hashimoto, the captain of the Japanese submarine I-58, came onto the deck. He took the binoculars. Hashimoto saw a ship because the moon was behind it and gave the order to dive. Hashimoto was very worried that it was a destroyer ship coming to attack the submarine. Hashimoto couldn't see the Indianapolis well because he wasn't zigzagging. At 11.54pm Hashimoto ordered 6 torpedoes to be ready at a depth of 4 meters and a speed of 48 knots. Subsequently, Hashimoto had torpedoes fired at the ship. At 12:02 the first explosion occurred and then the second. Red flames rose up, illuminating the darkness. Smoke soon followed.
