Mike Lofgren's The Party Is Over goes undercover to reveal what the politics are like behind the screen. I believe this book was more about criticizing the GOP and Republicans than the Democrats. The GOP and Republicans are very different in politics today than they were decades ago. The book talks about how Republicans are anti-government, how Republicans are anti-scientific and anti-intellectual, and also how they view religious rights. All this leads to problems with politics. The Democrats were polite compared to the Republicans, but they were mentioned anyway. They too have done some damage to today's politics. This book informs us about how the Republicans have gone crazy and the Democrats have become useless, and how all of this has become a problem. Republicans are against the federal government. As a result, they are ruining the concept of the foundations of self-government in a representative democracy. They use objection, obstruction, and stonewalling not only to block the governing process but also to make Americans deeply cynical about Washington. According to the book, lawmaking has become “war minus the shooting.” Eric Cantor, the House Republican leader, said he will hold up important legislation that could potentially affect our economic recovery during an entire session of Congress. Another example of a Republican who isn't exactly suited to political work is Newt Gingrich. Newt Gingrich saw the House as a rotten and corrupt institution largely because it was run by Democrats. When Gingrich gained control of the House, the result was just a waste of money and fixed committee nameplates. It also decimated the traditional committee system and reduced the power of the committee chair. When he resigned and the other Republic... in the midst of paper declarations... one can deduce that in some ways the Obama administration was like the Bush administration in terms of national foreign policy. Obama also made poor choices in expanding Bush policies that already represented a dangerous departure from constitutional practices. Another thing Obama did was increase our spending by billions, which may cause damage to his domestic reform programs and could lead to costly and divisive foreign wars. In closing, this book informs us how the Republicans went crazy and the Democrats became useless, and how it became a problem. The book reveals the faults of Republicans and Democrats "behind the scenes" and made me more aware of today's parties. Works Cited Lofgren, Mike.
