Another advantage of rule utilitarianism over act utilitarianism is that it does not abandon past obligations for the sake of increasing total well-being, nor does it sacrifice one's happiness on another as Act Utilitarianism does. Rule utilitarianism allows for certain freedoms in moral beliefs that would allow us to fully appreciate life while still living a moral life in the face of ethical dilemmas. For example, a rule utilitarian might think that if everyone allowed themselves to kill each other every time they were offended, total well-being would decrease exponentially.
