The Odyssey was written by Homer and is a Greek epic poem. It tells the story of how Odysseus returned from Troy after the Trojan War and of his travel adventures and experiences. In the book, Odysseus is portrayed as a hero by his actions and how he deals with difficult situations on his journey. During his nearly 10-year journey, Odysseus showed responsibility, justice, and wisdom in each of his trials. Responsibility, an important trait of a hero, is consistently demonstrated throughout the book for good reason. Odysseus shows his responsibilities early on at the beginning of his adventures on the Isle of the Lotus Eaters. On the island, some of Odysseus' men eat the lotus and begin to lose hope, wanting nothing more than to stay there forever. Odysseus also shows responsibility by quickly accessing the situation and taking on the task of leading, and even forcing, the men to leave the island and return them to his ship.
