Gru hatches an evil plan to steal the moon. To succeed in his plan he needs the help of three little girls he adopts. These three little girls turn his world upside down, showing him that he can be a loving father. These girls change his heart. Coffin and Renaud used cinematic and narrative techniques to illustrate the theme that good can overcome evil. They also explore the themes, anyone's heart can be changed by love and how important it is to have a loving family. The directors present these themes through the characters and events of the film. Gru is portrayed as a villain through his actions in numerous scenes, such as when he is walking along the path and the child's ice cream is dropped. The directors altered Gru's appearance, making him very unattractive, and the house he lives in is also undesirable. Once Gru adopts the three girls, he becomes very protective of them. When Vector, a young new villain, kidnaps the girls from the dance concert, Gru transforms into a hero to save them, even giving up the moon for them. In the scene where Gru takes the girls back from Vector, he also puts the moon back in its rightful place in space. Then the TV pre... middle of paper... chairs and his mother admits she's a better parent than she's ever been, brings a smile to Gru's face and he feels the reconnection between her and himself, as if the bond was finally mended. Bringing his mother into the film is important because it shows how Gru can actually be part of a family. I enjoyed watching this movie. It shows how people shouldn't be judged by their appearance or a few actions and how people can change. Often these people simply need something to love them unconditionally. This is a great film for children to watch as there are important underlying themes that they can pick up on. It is also a good movie for older people because they would appreciate the humor. The themes are successfully represented in the choice of characters and through the events.
