Generally, students do not read outside of class. They are stressed about homework and go home to watch TV to get rid of their worries. One fact reported from a survey of 136 freshman high school students is that “41% of freshman students receive homework every day of the week” (Wilson 3). A more beneficial way to de-stress the school day would be to sit down and read a fun book. Most students in this modern era don't have time to delve into a book and get lost in its pages for hours on end. Part of it may be that students are overwhelmed with homework or are too lazy. Another part could be that they have no motivation to read a book because without pictures, books have no meaning to them. To inspire students to enjoy reading for the rest of their lives, teachers and schools should allow students to choose a book, take multiple trips to the library, and expose students to different genres of books. In elementary school, students typically went to the library at least once a week or month to choose a book to read for independent reading. Sometimes, students don't return to class with a book because they don't feel like reading. It would be better for students if they had a say in what the library brings with it. We must understand that “children are the real consumers of resources” (Sanacore 1) in libraries. Therefore, librarians should always have student-friendly books on the shelves. To get books that appeal to younger students, teachers should first observe students “browsing and choosing materials from the school library” (Sanacore 2). If teachers notice a trend in the books students are reading, they should... middle of paper... feel the need to do so. Of course, some students don't like reading, and reading sometimes causes more stress, but they weren't taught how to enjoy reading in the beginning. If one has such an aversion to reading, one is not a reader and that is quite okay. Some people aren't the reading type. When school teachers cultivate a child's love of reading, the world can become more literate and engage more in reading instead of watching TV or playing video games. Without reading, one would not have the motivation to learn what interests them. So, encourage independent reading throughout elementary, middle, and even high school because students will immerse themselves in their work and lead more productive lives. Reading a book can educate someone about an issue and can be helpful throughout their life. It all starts with the younger generation and the library.
