To be fair, Oklahoma, particularly Norman, is actually going through an artistic and cultural revival, and it's not the absolute worst place for the arts. However, support for the arts simply isn't up to par. One of the issues I will explore is the fact that Norman is considered a college town. When someone thinks of Norman, they think of OU, and when they think of OU, most of the time they think of football. This is understandable and expected, given that we are part of the Big 12 and had a very successful season. That said, it's clear that football has an economic impact in Oklahoma. According to the NCAA, OU football brings in approximately $129,226,692 annually. By comparison, arts and culture organizations also impact the economy, bringing in approximately $314,776,098 in local economic activity each year (The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts & Culture Organizations in Oklahoma). So, this begs the question: if the arts have almost three times the impact on the economy than football, why aren't the arts as big of a deal or as supported? This is where that generalization that the South isn't very arts-friendly comes back into play.
