“Big is Beautiful” is a campaign started by H&M, a clothing company, that features “plus size models” ranging from sizes 16-30 (Rawi). The campaign was started because designers saw the potential to appeal to younger people by expanding their products to larger sizes and better fashion. Although the campaign was started primarily to increase sales to more women, people took the name of the campaign and turned it into a glorification of obesity rather than acceptance of being “fat.” The campaign's exaggeration caught the attention of many overweight and/or obese women who saw it as an opportunity to excuse their unhealthy body size. Having self-confidence is a positive quality, being unhealthily obese is not. Obesity can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many other health problems. While being too thin and having an eating disorder are not positive qualities, following a diet and exercising 3-5 times a week can help you achieve a desirable body.
