This consensus derives from evidence-based practice and controlled studies observed in many countries and in various contexts (Renfrew et al., 2014). To identify up-to-date evidence of effectiveness in maternal and newborn care, the leading medical journal Lancet performed its own obstetrics review, which was published in a four-part series in 2014. It is based on 453 reviews provided by the Cochrane Pregnancy Childbirth group at the Cochrane Library and eight reviews from the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Care Health Review plus additional material (Renfrew et al., 2014). This enormous work was collaboratively written by 35 experts from different countries and covered low-, middle-, and high-income contexts (Renfrew et al., 2014).
