Link Between Learned Helplessness and PTSD and Depression in a Battered WomanSummary:Bargai, Ben-Shakhar, and Shalev ( 2007) designed a study to test the hypothesis that learned helplessness (LH) affects the relationship between severity of violence and mental disorders in battered women, particularly posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression (MDD). . We further hypothesize that the severity of LH, PTSD, and MDD is positively related to the severity of violence. Finally, it has been hypothesized that there is a significant correlation between LH and invested background factors such as child abuse, socioeconomic backgrounds, and male predominance. The sample consisted of 102 battered women from eight of 11 Israeli shelters. All but one completed the 18-month course of this study. This study was conducted as a correlation study to determine the relationship between the measured variables. The independent variables in this study are battered women. All of these women were involved in a heterosexual relationship in which they experienced some form of violence. 90% of these women have suffered serious physical and/or sexual violence. There are four dependent variables: exposure to violence, symptoms of PTSD and major depressive disorder, LH, and background variables that can be attributed to behavior. These variables were assessed through self-report questionnaires and clinical interviews. The procedures were carried out as follows: Participants must sign an informed consent after receiving a full briefing on the purpose of this study. Once signed, participants were given 200 NIS, which equals $45. At the shelter, each participant was taken individually and a trained… middle of paper… distressed woman. They conducted this study on 101 women from eight of 11 Israeli shelters. Clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires were used to measure LH and severity of violence and PTSD and MDD symptoms. They also looked at different aspects of the person's education. The hypothesis was confirmed. The results show that LH is positively related to male-dominated contexts. Additionally, LH is believed to increase the risk of mental disorders.
