Topic > The Evil Characters in The Scarlet Letter - 842

The Scarlet Letter, a book about sin and guilt, reveals two characters who are so purely evil, that it is difficult to believe that such characters could be created---Roger Chillingworth and Mrs. Hibbins. Chillingworth and Hibbins may seem like good people, but in reality they only symbolize evil. Roger Chillingworth is HesterPrynne's elderly husband, shunned by the entire colony of Boston, Massachusetts, for the sin of adultery committed with the city's celebrated minister. The people of the colony see Chillingworth as a friendly doctor who was sent by God to restore health to people like Arthur Dimmesdale, the town's lauded minister. However, as the book progresses, it is known as something completely different. Chillingworth is a person driven by revenge and is determined to find out who the father of Hester's daughter is. One particular scene reveals this, as Chillingworth attempts to give Hester a prescription to help her sleep and Hester accuses him of trying to kill her: “Do you know me so little, Hester Prynne? Won't my purpose be so superficial? Even if I imagine a revenge plan, what better could I do for my purpose than to let you live? (Hawthorne p.50) Chillingworth is saying that because of Hester's sin, she is shunned by everyone and that the shame will stay with her and haunt her for the rest of her life. Every day of her life is filled with suffering and Chillingworth wants her to live so that he can suffer in the worst way possible and that is to let her live. Furthermore, Chillingworth says, “I will feel myself shivering, suddenly and unconsciously. Sooner or later it will have to be mine!” (p. 52) His impulse for revenge is so powerful that the soul of Hester's lover will be his forever. In the same... in the center of the sheet... it symbolizes "The Black Man". Chillingworth isn't the only one with an evil spirit. Mrs. Hibbins is known for riding with "The Boogeyman" into the forest on horseback due to her sinister ways, the ways of a witch. Both Mistress Hibbins and Chillingworth were expected to be good people, yet they turned out to be the most horrible characters in The Scarlet Letter. Although Roger Chillingworth's appearance began as a kind and friendly doctor, he was purely evil and driven by revenge. that turned his mind into something horrible. Although Mrs. Hibbins was the sister of such an important person who loved God, she was basically the evil witch from "The BlackMan". Therefore, people are not always what they seem and although the people around them are fair, it does not mean that they will be. Works Cited The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne
