Josef was born on March 19, 1888 in Bottrop, Germany. At the age of 17 he became an elementary school teacher. At 25 he studied in Berlin to broaden his skills and become a certified art teacher. Over the years he continued to enrich his education by attending various art academies; The School of Arts and Crafts, the Munich Academy and Franz von Stuck. In 1922 he enrolled at the Bauhaus, a teaching institute in Weimar, Germany. Here at the Bauhaus is where his successes began and where he met his life partner, Anni.
