Topic > The federal government should fund police forces

Millions of free citizens around the world have reported police misconduct. In the United States alone, 8,800 officers have been reported to use excessive force in the performance of their jobs (Packman). One of the main causes of excessive use of force by police is the anxiety and anger caused by low compensation. The police are a force that aims to protect people from threats, not to be a threat. Police do not receive sufficient compensation for the dangerous work they do every day. The federal government should provide a secure environment to properly maintain a legal country. When the police don't do their job properly, the environment is unsafe. Therefore, the federal government must increase funding to the police force to ensure a better and more efficient police force and strive to eliminate police misconduct. Police forces in the United States should receive additional federal funding; the additional funds will create a better economy, build a safer environment, and prevent police abuse of the system. The economy, in most countries, is the number one priority. A country's prosperity is judged by its economic value and the amount of capital it acquires. Bringing more funding into the police force will boost the economy in many different ways. First, funding the force will create many new jobs. “In San Juan and Carolina, Puerto Rico, the federal government provided money to police forces, creating more than 118,000 new jobs involving law enforcement” (Walsh). Most people agree that job creation leads to a much stronger economy and can help get money into the hands of poor people who can't find work. Additionally, the federal government could decide what police forces can and cannot have, thus preventing forces from purchasing unnecessary items and misspending the new funds. With a strong flow of money into the police force, we could create a larger, more effective and safer police force. More branches of law enforcement could be opened to help solve, prove or investigate crimes, and with additional funding police forces could obtain more technology. Without these things, the police force cannot be as effective as it should be. Police are more effective at fighting crime when they have a higher salary. All of these additional benefits all come from increased federal funding for police forces. The federal government needs to fund the police force much better.
