Since the show became popular and the family became so famous, many legal questions have arisen regarding the legality of marriages and living situations. In 2011 the Brown v. Buhman filed in U.S. District Court. When the TV show aired, many questions arose and the video of Kody and Robyn's wedding was used against them in court. The Brown family fought back, claiming that the situation was legal because only one marriage was on paper and the other wives only had spiritual marriages. In June 2012, the criminal case against the Browns was dropped. Afterwards, the family was allowed to continue their unusual marriage because it was about religion and only one wife was technically married to Kody. Although the Browns have seventeen children and their parents all practice polygamy, many of their children have already said they don't think the polygamous life is right for them.
