“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." ― Dalai Lama XIV, The Art of Happiness. This quote from the Dalai Lama has great meaning. Most see compassion as simply another word in this world, when it is much more than that. Compassion brings people together, makes the world a better place, and most importantly, allows you to connect with others. Compassion is necessary to the human experience because it keeps the world emotionally connected. With compassion, people become closer. Compassion provides love and without this emotion humans would be isolated from each other. Love would not be considered love without compassion. It distinguishes a human being from being heartless to one who cares for people other than himself. Being compassionate leads a person away from a path of selfishness and builds strong relationships with others. The following authors have done a great job of demonstrating this. Tacitus states in his text, "The Burning of Rome", that, "Nevertheless, for the relief of the homeless fugitive masses, he threw open the Field of Mars, including Agrippa's public buildings." and even its gardens. Nero also built emergency housing for the destitute multitude. Food was brought from Ostia and nearby towns, and the price of corn was cut,” (Tacitus, 408). Nero acting after the destructive fire shows compassion towards the people of his city. This action would help Nero build bonds with his people, Nero did it for the good of the city. Without Nero showing compassion, the entire city of Rome will continue to fall apart and will never be repaired. Li Po, the author of the text "The River Merchant's Wife", with... in the center of the paper... ... road so far, further than he can imagine. His spirit returned to where the maple woods are green, then returned, leaving me in the darkness of the border. (Tu Fu, 264.) This quote shows how Tu Fu had compassion for Li Po when he entered his life again, but when Li Po left, he remained sad. Li Po showed no compassion towards Tu Fu, leaving him in a state of depression. The quote shows that compassion is necessary because without it no one would be happy. The authors included above included these specific parts of the texts to piece together the story. The lyrics will be completely different without the compassion present in “The Burning of Rome”, “River Merchants Wife”, “Things Fall Apart” and “Dreaming of Li Po”. Compassion is necessary to the human experience for multiple reasons; Compassion brings people together, makes the world a better place, and makes people happy.
