The author reveals many tactics used by the government to drive away the homeless. One tactic is bathroom use, everyone has to use the bathroom numerous times a day. That said, “At Penn Station, fifteen blocks away, homeless women are denied the use of the restroom” (Jonathan 277). When homeless people are denied the use of the bathroom, they have no choice but to use it outdoors with nothing to properly clean themselves. Not being able to clean yourself properly also causes illness and hygiene problems. When we think of a normal person, we tend to think of them as having good hygiene and taking care of themselves; there are homeless people out there who want to bathe, but are denied access. The second tactic used by the government is to try to cut off the homeless people's food sources so they have no reason to go out. Jonathan informs that the government tries to prevent food distribution in some places because this only attracts more hungry families and scares people in public. The goal of getting rid of homelessness has pushed the government to take extreme steps to eliminate them. Evidently the government will do everything it can to get rid of them, even if it means treating them like animals. “A city council member proposed spraying trash containers with rat poison to discourage homeless families from searching for food” (Jonathan 279).
