Narrative Essay The second semester of the Sergeants Major course covers a lot of material on organizations, leaders, power, influence, stress, ethics, vision, culture, and climate. The knowledge gained from blocks L103, L105, L107 and L109 is important for future Operations Sergeants Major because; we will be able to assist the commander through the process of changing climate and culture and enable the unit to become stronger as a team. Kotter Model The Kotter Model comes from block L103 and is an eight-step model that helps avoid mutual problems that plague the smallest attempts at change in an organization. Organizational leaders will guide their organizations through this process in order to have a positive and lasting effect. A leader cannot stall, bounce, or make a major mistake within a step prematurely, as any of these actions would have a destructive effect on the success of the change. The steps of the Kotter model are: (1) establish a sense of urgency (2) create the guiding coalition (3) develop a vision and strategy (4) communicate the vision for change (5) empower a broad base of people to take action (6) generate short-term successes (7) consolidate gains and produce even more change (8) institutionalize new approaches in the culture. This model guides leaders through the process of trying to change an organization's climate and culture; I will explain each step briefly. In the first phase it is vibrant, the leader establishes a sense of determination by showing the benefits and importance of the change. Phase two leaders must organize and support the development of the adjustment. As we think about visions, let's remember the Army's vision and how it has changed a few times over the years and to support the change they came up with slogans. A vision builder must ensure that if you use a slogan it must have meaning, not use an empty one just to have one. Remember that a vision is a key used by leaders to successfully move their organizations into the future. Conclusion In conclusion I have provided the details of what I learned and was taught in the second semester of the Academy.
