Hintsa GirmayENGL 1301- 73480Essay-1 Observational Essay (Working Draft) Why do people go to the mall? I'm sitting on a bench at Irving Mall. I smell cinnamon, hints of coffee, cleaning fluids and other fragrances that I can't distinguish. I wonder why people go to the mall. I know it's supposed to be a place to buy things. That's the point, isn't it? To shop? However, as I look around, I notice that a good portion of the people I see, including couples, teenagers, families and groups from different subcultures, don't even carry shopping bags. It seems they are here for other reasons. A couple I saw earlier were holding hands, looking like they were just hanging out for the fun of being together. I'm not sure what the reason is for them to be here, but I wonder if they bought anything today? The point where I would stop at Subway and order a six-inch meatball sub with extra cheese and a Coke. Sitting nearby, I take a bite. It's delicious! Of course in my hunger I didn't let it cool very well and I feel a slight tingling inside my mouth at the top. I quickly drink some pop to cool the burning sensation. It seems like other people enjoy their food too. Some have Mexican dishes, some Chinese, and some dishes I can't make out from the angle I'm currently at. This brings me to another conclusion that some people come to eat in shopping malls. While there are probably many other reasons why people love to go to various malls across the United States, this short essay has looked at just a few reasons why people come to the mall beyond just shopping. As I exit, I slide my hand along the smooth metal railing leading out of the mall. It's cold, but I can't take my hand away. It's also just plain fun to do. I decide that next time I come back, I want to get a pretzel from Aunt Anne. Who knows, though? Maybe next time I'll just go back to the mall
