We all know those nerdy types and computer gurus who have minimal social skills but are expert hackers and can spend hours alone locked in their caves. These are the type of people who can succeed in online classes. However, online education is not feasible for those students who need in-person guidance from a live professor, who are not computer literate, and who want a credible degree that will allow them to get a good job. As far as I'm concerned, there are many benefits to being in a classroom with a teacher. The on-the-fly knowledge and notes they provide have been invaluable. In a classroom environment the student can ask any question they have and receive and answer it immediately. Additionally, the professor can get to know the students and provide specific support the student may need. Say no to plagiarism. What I think is above average knowledge of computers, but there's a lot I don't know. In a mainstream school there are resources available for those who need them. Services like computer labs, libraries, and tutoring are all part of gaining the knowledge you need. Students don't have to worry about having the newest and most up-to-date hardware because it will be available to them through the school's facilities. According to a 2013 Gallop poll, most Americans still consider a traditional college degree superior to an online degree. The majority of respondents, 68%, rated four-year schools as “excellent” or “good,” while 64% rated community colleges at the same level as four-year schools. Only 13% of respondents said an online degree would be viewed favorably by employers, and only 11% believed the online school's tests and grades were reliable. Even though the public's perception of online degrees has changed, many employers still prefer a degree from a traditional college. While traditional school isn't for everyone, it's what works best for me. Professors are available for face-to-face interactions and to answer student questions. Those who do not have the technology to attend online education have resources available to use on campus. The degree I will get from attending a traditional school is still the preferred education to have in the working world. There are many reasons why someone should choose traditional school over online school and these are some of mine.
