When entering Jen Frost Smith's gallery page, I was struck by the childish drawings and crazy colors. I immediately thought "...This is actually in a gallery???" and, no lie, I rolled my eyes. That is until I decided to take a look at his works. Then I realized he was a genius. Truly a genius. On the front page is a mind-blowing exhibit involving many cats in many forms, including wall paint, canvas and what appears to be painted clay to make a point. Feel good. Cool phrases like “Magic is real!” and “YOU ARE AWESOME!” comes out of what appears to be a smiley poop emoji… which, no lie, made me laugh in a way I haven't laughed in months. I caught myself giggling when I found little details, like the kitten on the laptop that looks like another cartoon cat is playing with. The cartoony snacks surrounding him speak volumes about his surfing habits and instantly looked familiar, as I've done the same while binging YouTube videos or playing games on my laptop. Many aren't just visual traps to ensure feelings of goodwill... some are extraordinarily interactive, as in the case of his "Good-vibes" exhibit, which featured a pair of furry arms granting hugs to people passing by for a fun photo op . . Many of the people used as examples for the use of art are grinning from ear to ear while looking ridiculous in the arms of the blurry walls, which says it all about Jen's intentions for her works. It's incredibly refreshing and lacks the almost self-important vibe that comes from art doing its best to alienate the person viewing the art. She does her best to make you understand her and her world, which is very endearing and makes me want more from her. It has definitely won a fan for life!
