His parents were sharecroppers, people who rented land and instead of paying with money, paid with the harvest. In 1958, Ruby's family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and lived on a densely populated African-American block. William Frantz Elementary School was an all-white school, and many people were outraged that it was being integrated. That November morning, several federal agents showed up at her door, saying they would take her to her new school.
