The Cask of Amontillado and The Count of Monte Cristo both have various ways of showing how the theme of revenge is betrayed in the text. In the story "The Cask of Amontillado," Poe begins by showing us how our protagonist, Montressor, acts after the betrayal. In the book The Count of Monte Cristo, we are shown how our protagonist, Edmond Dantes, acts before and after the betrayal. The theme of “understanding what it means to be human” is revealed as revenge in both texts. Both texts show how their “characterization influenced the theme of revenge”. The theme of revenge is shown to us by their own characterization, by the people around them and by what leads them to their actions. Say no to plagiarism. Get an original essayIn the story "The Cask of Amontillado" we are shown that our protagonist Montressor is betrayed by Fortunado but we don't know what exactly Fortunado did to make Montressor feel betrayed. “I had borne Fortunado's thousand insults as best I could; but when he dared to insult me, I swore revenge. This implies that when Fortunado insulted Montressor, he went too far, prompting him to take revenge. We are not shown how Montressor behaved before the betrayal, but we know that when Montressor talks to Fortunado he states "You are rich, respected, admired, loved, you are happy, like I once was" which implies that before being betrayed Montressor he was not only a cold-hearted and vindictive person, but Montesor was a very sensitive and kind-hearted person. Montressor was pushed too far, which led him to retaliate and wall Fortunado alive. However in the book The Count of Monte Cristo we are shown when Edmond is betrayed by his "best friend" Fernand and is put in prison called Chateau D. "If this gives us a chance to see how his characterization changes before he is put in prison and after his escape". In the film we were shown of The Count of Monte Cristo we see how before he was arrested Edmond was very worried, naive and naive. The way he acted before he was put in prison allowed people to really take advantage of him, which really made him unaware of what was going on around him. Luigi challenges Edmond to fight Jacapo to the death but when he fights Edmond he doesn't actually kill him because everyone got what they wanted, which was a show. Jacapo ends up giving Edmond his life oath. Edmond and Jacapo find the treasure of Monte Cristo and when Jacapo asks Edmond what he wants to buy, he states that he wants to buy "revenge". Edmond and Jacapo have been studying Fernand and Mercedes, his old girlfriend who ended up marrying Fernand 1 month after his arrest, for about 16 years. Edmond comes up with a plan and arranges a fight to capture Fernand's son Albert, which causes Edmond to meet his parents. When Edmond meets his parents, Mercedes recognizes something in him and says he seems familiar like her old love Edmond, but he is introduced as the Count of Monte Cristo, so how could it be him? Fernand ends up getting arrested for bankruptcy which he then tells Mercedes but she refuses to move in with him.
