Catcher in the Rye is one of the most famous books in American literature. Written by JD Salinger, it captures the epitome of adolescence through Salinger's infamous anti-hero, Holden Caulfield. Holden Caulfield learns about himself and his negative tendencies and realizes that if he doesn't do something to change his perspective, he could end up like his acquaintance James Castle who he met in Elkton Hills. Holden tries to find help to correct his outlook on life through Mr. Antolini, so that he doesn't end up like James, who didn't want to deal with the problems he created for himself. This is demonstrated by the similarities between James Castle and Holden, Mr. Antolini's willingness to try to help Holden, and Holden's future as envisioned by James. Holden met James Castle at Elkton Hills School and, although they only had one conversation together, the similarities between the two characters are striking. Both James and Holden are quite thin and appear weak. In math class, the role call was "Cabel, R., Cabel, W., Castle, Caulfield" (171). Holden's name was right after James'. James is always one step ahead of Holden, suggesting to the reader that Holden could be the next James Castle. James Castle dies by jumping out of a window, after some boys chased him into the bathroom because he “didn't want to take back something he said about this very cocky boy, Phil Stabile” (170). James refused to retract his comment. Both Holden and James find fault in people and are very judgmental. This could lead to Holden's death, just like it did with James. If Holden isn't careful, saying the wrong thing to someone could drive them crazy, or Holden could go crazy with all those negative thoughts... middle of the paper... whether their thought processes are flawed or not. But this reluctance to conform was what made James jump out the window. Although Holden admires James' integrity, he also realizes that if he doesn't change his ways, he could end up like James. But Holden wouldn't have had someone like Mr. Antolini to help him and cover his body. Holden must find a driving force within himself that wants to make him change. He must find a new vision of life and cannot be afraid to grow. She needs to set an example for Phoebe and show her that running away or running away from her problems is not an option. Ducks can only fly for a certain time. And Holden must realize that he cannot progress when he judges all the fakes in the world. The young rye hunter must find a balance between becoming an adult and flying away. Works CitedThe Catcher in the Rye JD Salinger
