With Germany facing the worst of the Depression due to reparations, hyperinflation and most German soldiers losing their jobs due to the size of their forces being limited armies. Adolf Hitler used the hatred and anger that the Germans had and redirected their anger towards the Jews. Hitler was a born Austrian, who served in the German Army during World War I; he won several medals for his service. In 1919, Hitler joined the Workers' Party, which was later renamed the Nazi Party. Within two years the group went from around forty men to more than three thousand. The goals of this party were to create a bigger and better Germany. They wanted to unite Germany once again, end the Treaty of Versailles, and expel all undesirables so the Germans could have their jobs. To unite Germany, Hitler decided to unleash a revolution on 30 October 1923 and take over the Bavarian government, leading two thousand men. This included two groups that formed the "Brown Shirts" (SA), which were Hitler's army and the SS who served as Hitler's personal bodyguards. The coup failed and Hitler was imprisoned for treason. After being pardoned more than four years earlier, Hitler published his book Mein Kampf, in which he destroyed his beliefs about anti-Semitism and the superiority of the Aryan race. To help increase his number of supporters, Hitler had Dr. Josef Goebbels lead his propaganda campaign. Propaganda above all
