In recent years, the transgender movement has become more visible than ever. With television shows like “RuPaul's Drag Race,” “Keeping It Up With Cait” and “I Am Jazz,” the voices of transgender people are more public than ever. Celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverene Cox are changing the face of the movement by showing people that it's never too late to be yourself. American laws recognize the rights of transgender people, but not in a positive way. These are just people trying to be their best. Transgender people deserve to have all the rights that a non-transgender person enjoys. As a person who assigns himself the assigned sex, I can go to the doctor at any time for any problem and I can get. Unfortunately, people who identify as transgender do not have the same rights as me. A transgender person by definition is: “someone whose gender identity, or an individual's internal sense of being male or female, does not align with their assigned sex” (Barry). Transgender people may refuse to see a doctor just because they are transgender. A study was conducted on how transgenders were discriminated against by healthcare providers and the study showed: “19% were refused treatment by a doctor or other healthcare provider due to their transgender or non-gender status compliant" (). Broken down by race, the most rejected ethnic group was: American Indian (36%), multiracial (27%), Hispanic (22%), black (19%), white (17%), Asian (15%), and then 19% (total sample). Not only can they be denied medical care, but doctors and healthcare providers can also be verbally abusive! “Over a quarter of respondents (28%) reported verbal harassment in a doctor's office, emergency room, or other medical setting, and 2% of respondents reported that celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas, and Demi Lovato have deleted their tour dates in North Carolina making comments in favor of trans rights Springsteen said: “Some things are more important than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry – which is happening as I write – is one of them. These are the strongest means I have to raise my voice against those who continue to push us backwards instead of forwards” (Berman and Lovato jointly released a statement saying: “We know the cancellation of these shows is disappointing for our fans, but we trust that you will join us against this hateful law. One of our goals for the tour has always been to create an atmosphere where every single participant feels equal, included and accepted for who they are. North Carolina's discriminatory HB2 law is extremely disappointing and takes away some of the most basic rights and protections of the LGBT community” (Smith). I completely agree with Jonas, Lovato and Springsteen. This law must be abolished very soon. There should be a law that implements gender-neutral bathrooms everywhere, so a transgender person can feel comfortable and safe no matter where they are. Transgender
