There are several instances in the book Night of Elie Wiesel where Elie has an internal conflict regarding his spirituality. Elie witnesses many horrors and there are moments when he questions the presence of God. However, there are other moments when Elie thanks and prays to God. Elie's beliefs change throughout the book and he is unsure of what to think . Early on we meet Elie's master, Moishe the Beadle. Every evening the two prayed, asked questions, and talked about God. Elie even said, “And over the course of those evenings I became convinced that Moishe the Priest would help me enter eternity” (Wiesel 5). However, things began to change. Foreign Jews were deported from Sighet and a Moishe who normally sang and chanted, fell silent. Soon German army vehicles appeared on the streets. During the eight-day Passover, the Jewish community celebrated. The Bible commanded them to, but everyone wished they could stop pretending.
