The three that I consider the most fun are the pediatric nurse, the trauma nurse, and the orthopedic nurse. A pediatric nurse provides care to children, adolescents and their families in various settings. They respond to the physical and psychosocial aspects of their health and illness. Pediatric nurses also help prevent disease, manage physical and mental disabilities, and respond to acute and chronic illnesses. A pediatric nurse can diagnose many things, including acute and chronic problems such as upper and lower respiratory tract infections; ear, nose and throat infections; asthma; growth and development problems. One great thing about a pediatric nurse is that they have many hands-on roles including staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, case manager, supervisor and nurse manager. Some great characteristics you need to be an exceptional and fun pediatric nurse are direct patient care and relationships, autonomy and independent functioning, teaching, making a difference, and teamwork. When you work in the pediatric department you will take care of patients from newborn to adolescence. Since there are many positive aspects to being a pediatric nurse, there are also some drawbacks including lack of patient cooperation, patient pain, paperwork and policies, bureaucracy, stress, ethical conflicts and the pressure.
