The annual profits generated by the human trafficking industry are estimated to be $32 billion. When people are trafficked they lose their freedom and are transported illegally across or within countries' borders. The U.S. Department of State estimates that 14,500 to 17,500 individuals are trafficked into the United States from foreign countries and that more than 4 million people are trafficked each year. Human trafficking has become a global problem, which it has not yet been possible to stop even with laws or acts that combat it. There are many factors of human trafficking, such as poverty, broken families and corruption. Poverty is a major driver of human trafficking because most poor people have fewer opportunities for education and stable employment. Traffickers exploit these flaws by telling lies such as promising better economic lives. Most American victims are disaffected, runaways, or children who are abandoned. Official corruption and organized crime are other drivers of trafficking, in which police officers accept bribes to pass women into the sex trade. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) at least eight organized criminal groups traffic women (Cullen-DuPont). One factor that comes into play a lot in human trafficking is gender. Today's statistics say that adult women are more frequently victims of trafficking, then minors, or around 6 girls for every boy. The smallest group of trafficked people are men. Gender inequality is a major factor in the use of fraud to enslave women. In many countries, the most common being poor, girls have fewer educational opportunities than boys.
