Women throughout the history of Australian labor have been continually restricted because of their gender (D. Miles 2002). This was due to multiple reasons ranging from family care to blatant discrimination against women (M. Leahy 2011). Over the past twenty years this glass ceiling has diminished (M. Leahy 2011). A glass ceiling represents an unrecognized barrier to professional advancement, especially affecting women and members of minority groups (Oxford Dictionaries 2014). Australia is an extremely strong country economically and socially, offering women a brilliant platform to engage in whatever they wish to pursue. This essay will showcase an opinion that does not believe there is a glass ceiling hanging over women within Australian employment practices. This document will refer to issues relating to equality, power, fairness and universalisation. These issues will help support and justify why the glass ceiling imposed on women in Australian employment practices has been eliminated. Power has changed dramatically throughout a woman's lifetime over the past twenty years, not just in Australia but around the world. Power can be defined as the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way (Oxford Dictionaries 2014). As women's roles have changed, there is more focus on education that will result in a career, whereas women were forced to get married immediately upon finishing school and then start a family. Although the change in women's roles took a massive turn once World War II began, as women were required to take on male roles at work, jobs such as working in banks, factories and workshops (E.
