When walking around a random city, people often judge strangers without necessarily knowing them very well. In J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caulfield labels many people as phonies without first fully knowing them. During his trip to New York City, Holden Caulfield meets many people, and most people are quick to judge them. Holden Caulfield is shown to be very critical even though he does not know the person, only noticing children as innocent, marking most adults as fake, and trying to save children from aging and corruption. Holden Caulfield is a very critical person because he only marks children as innocent. “Take adults, they look gross when they sleep, but babies don't. Children seem fine." In this quote he makes fun of adults but states that children are admirable when they sleep. This quote takes place when Holden comes home to see Phoebe and she is sleeping. He sits there and admires her, he also states that it is even acceptable if a child's mouth is completely open and drool comes out. His main point here is that children lose their i...... half of the paper...... users they do their job to save his or her life because they care about him or her or simply because they want to "be a great lawyer." Another question he asked the lawyers and later answered was how would they know if “they weren't fakes? The problem is, you wouldn't.” (Salinger 172). The job of a lawyer is to prove the innocence of a man or woman, regardless of whether he is or not. This makes Holden think that being a lawyer is a fake job. One topic that Holden speaks exclusively towards falsehood is his Pencey school. “At Pencey one is expected to play the game,… “game of life.” (Pinsker). Holden explains that this game they talk about is rubbish, if one gets on the good side with all the good people this” game" is very exciting, but if one takes the side of all the losers then there is no fun because the big boys just beat up the losers.
