Bradley stated that nursing students agree that nursing is not as female-dominated as it has been in the past and that males make good nurses (as cited in Rajacich et al ., 2013). Gender diversity represents a great advantage for the nursing profession and its diverse patient population (MacWilliams, 2013). Stated by Goldman for the organization, this leads to reduced employee engagement and lower job performance, as well as the risk of legal action (as cited by Hoffnung, et al., 2013). This type of role strain, job dissatisfaction, and lack of support for nurses leads many to abandon their chosen profession, even if only for a short time (Rajacich et al., 2013). According to Sochalski, 7.5% of graduate nurses were not working in 2000, compared to 4.1% of female graduates (as cited in Rajacich et al., 2013). With the challenges of workplace discrimination, lack of support, and the impact of job dissatisfaction and potential lawsuits, it is easy to see why men in nursing appear to be a minority and the nursing profession is losing valuable employees who are a resource for nursing.
