There are different types of therapy that use horses. Hippotherapy means “treatment with the help of a horse” (Naomi Scott). The word hippopotamus is used because this term comes from the Greek word hippopotamus meaning horse. “Hippotherapy is generally indicated for children and adults with mild to severe neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.” (Noemi Scott). This type of therapy uses horse movement to improve the patient's neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. These dysfunctions may include “abnormal muscle tone, impaired balance responses, impaired coordination, impaired communication, impaired sensorimotor function, postural asymmetry, poor postural control, impaired mobility, and limbic system problems related to arousal, motivation, and attention. Functional limitations related to general motor skills such as sitting, standing, walking; speech and language skills; and behavioral and cognitive skills, can be improved with hippotherapy.” (Noemi Scott). Hippotherapy is not recommended for all riders with disabilities. Another type of therapy is called Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy or EFP. This type of therapy includes “handling, grooming, lunging, driving, driving and twirling.” - (Naomi Scott). This type of therapy does not help physically, however being close to the horse helps psychological healing. Therapeutic riding dates back to World War I when it was used to help veterans (Naomi Scott). “Handicapped running began in Scandinavia” -(Naomi Scott). There are many well-known equine facilities such as WETRA, CARD, EAGALA, NARHA and CANTRA. Therapeutic riding can benefit you in many different aspects. Its psychological benefits include promoting feelings of power and......center of card......stay upright.Contact NARHA to begin a horseback riding program (Naomi Scott). NARHA stands for North American Riding Association for the Handicapped (3). To be a therapeutic riding instructor you must complete a NARHA accredited training program to become certified (3). Riding programs are also a good place for children to interact with other children (Naomi Scott). During the riding programs students work on volunteer management, disability, lunges, hippotherapy, vaulting and more (Naomi Scott). Horseback riding is a fun activity. Therapeutic riding really helps to increase a child's self-esteem (Naomi Scott). Having control over the horse makes the rider feel feelings of power (Naomi Scott). It boosts their self-esteem to be able to force a horse into the arena (3) Riding a horse is a really fun thing to do and it's important that children have fun.
